If you're an independent type designer and you see unauthorised uses of your font, honestly I'd usually advise you to try to ignore it. You don't typically need to pay any fees to secure the copyrights to your own work, but some larger type foundries will register trademarks to protect the names of their typefaces. If you sell your fonts at a marketplace, they will take a cut between 20–60%, in exchange for use of their platform and access to their audience of font buyers. I'm not sure what you mean by profit pitfalls, and securing creative property rights, but I can take some guesses. They may be outliers, but they didn't just get lucky, they put in the work. If you put a lot of work into it and you do a decent job of marketing your work, I've heard of at least a few type designers making $100–300K annually. There are type designers around the world who make passive income selling fonts, but I would say the majority of them do it to supplement their income, not as their primary job.
